The 2022 Indy 500 was full of surprises, winners and losers. Here’s the Winners and Losers rundown for the “Greatest Spectacle of Racing”

Winner: Marcus Ericsson

Obviously the first winner has to be the victor. Despite a day of highs and lows for the Chip Ganassi Racing team, they were still able to have one of their drivers win the prestigious race. Ericsson managed the two-lap shootout pressure flawlessly. After an outside-pass attempt from Pato O’Ward in which Ericsson was able to hold off, O’Ward fell too far back to try again as the Swede reign victorious. Adding to that, he also has the series lead.

Loser: Scott Dixon

Even after leading 95 of the 200 laps, Dixon was caught speeding in the pit lane on lap 175. He had to serve a painful drive-through penalty, resulting in a 21st place finish.

Winner: Chip Ganassi Racing

Despite finishes of 21st and 28th for two of their drivers, they still had three drivers in the top ten, 1st, 3rd and 9th respectively. It could have been better, but it also could’ve been way worse.

Loser: Alex Palou

Palou got painfully unlucky after a caution came out just before having to do an emergency stop for fuel while the pit lane was closed. He was almost put to the back because of it. But he made a comeback to finish 9th. He now sits third in the championship.

Winner: Arrow McLaren SP

Even though they missed out on the win, the Arrow McLaren SP team put on a strong showing. Finishing with O’Ward P2, Rosenqvist P4 and Montoya P11, it was a successful day for the team. Maybe next year they’ll win this race.

Loser: Takuma Sato

Sato took a gamble on fuel and looked on pace for a strong finish with some yellow flag luck, but after the red flag came out, he ran out of fuel in the pitlane.

Winner: Alexander Rossi

Unlike the rest of the Andretti Autosport team, Rossi came up with a top-five finish. Moving up from 20th to fifth, it was overall a great day for Rossi. Can he return to form? We’ll have to see.

Loser: Andretti Autosport

Even though Rossi had a top-five finish, the Andretti team had a rough day, their next driver, Devlin Defrancesco, finished 20th. The rest of the drivers were Marco Andretti in 22nd, Wilson in 26th, Herta in 30th and Grosjean in 31st.

Winner: Helio Castroneves

Even though Castroneves didn’t get his 5th win, he showed excellent race-pace. Going from 27th to seventh, he was the biggest mover, going up twenty spots. Maybe if he qualifies better next year, he might be able to complete the “Drive For Five”
