The 2022 Detroit Grand Prix on the streets of Belle Isle was one of, if not the most action-packed race of the season.

Will Power handled the pressure from Alexander Rossi at the end to win by just over a second. It was Power’s first win of the season.

Rossi, starting 11th, was looking at a mediocre finish, but quickly made up five positions over five laps before taking a pit-stop, putting him on a three-stop strategy. On that stop, he switched from reds to blacks, the blacks were the better tyre on this bumpy track. He then proceeded to move up the order quickly. Power, who started on blacks, after about fifteen laps or so, found himself in the lead. He was followed by Scott Dixon and Alex Palou, who, on their first stops, went to the reds. They were in Rossi’s pursuit though, getting passed twelve laps later.

Power, on his first stop, stayed on blacks and would have to switch to reds at the end of the race, a bold move, but the 12 team thought it may work. It seemed as if Power was screwed, as Rossi, who didn’t have to save much fuel, was charging after him. Power had to go on the reds for roughly twenty laps, but he ultimately just held off Rossi to win.

This makes Power the leader of the championship over Marcus Ericsson who is down by just three points.

Will Rossi score his first win since Road America 2019 in the near future? Only time will tell.

The next race is at Road America on Sunday.
