The Sonsio Grand Prix of Road America ended in a quite different fashion as a caution-infested start and end as Josef Newgarden went on to the finish line in first place.
The race kind of came down to pit stops as on the first set of them, Newgarden was able to pass pole-sitter Alexander Rossi in the pits to gain the lead. He was in control of the race from there.
The race started clean until Jimmie Johnson tried to overtake Tatiana Calderon on the outside of turn 3, but her move to the left caused Johnson to run off the track, spin into the gravel and stall the car. On the lap 4 restart though, another caution came out when Marcus Ericsson, who had the corner, made contact with teammate Alex Palou. Who was out for ten laps until rejoining. Another most definitely clean restart on lap 7 ended up with Devlin Defrancesco clashing with Will Power, spinning Power’s car into the turn 5 barrier, causing a caution.
Finally, on lap 11, there was a clean restart with Rossi leading the pack as the race went on and on.
Towards the end of the race, Rossi began chipping at Newgarden’s lead just down to around 2.7 seconds, then a caution came out. Everyone thought of this as an opportunity for Rossi to pass Newgarden, but on the restart, Newgarden got away well. But also on the restart, a caution was waved again as Castroneves went into the grass. On the final restart, Newgarden got away well again. Rossi, however, was bumped down to third after he lost a gap he had to Ericsson, who got a run down into turn 1, and passed him. Newgarden went on to win by around 3 seconds.
Josef also won the PeopleReady Force For Good Challenge and won $1 million to share with, half to himself and his team, and half to a charity of his choice, which he has two charities.
“I just kept forgetting about it,” he said of the bonus. “To finally get it done and to most importantly give that money to charity; half that money is going to charity with SeriousFun Children’s Network and Wags and Walks Nashville. I hope they are happy about that. That’s a lot of money coming their way.”
What will happen in three weeks for the Mid-Ohio race? Will Newgarden keep winning, Rossi keeping momentum, or an unexpected winner?
